By now you have probably heard the disturbing news about the new law that was passed in New York. On Thursday, January 24th, Satan doubled-down and governor Andrew Cuomo of New York city declared that it is now lawful to abort full-term babies for the healthof the mother.
After the initial shock and wave of horror that ignites one’s fury, one has to think about the question of whythis happened. A scientific reason was cited. However murdering innocent babies is a moral-ethical matter, not a scientific one.
It’s no surprise that our culture has changed rapidly in the last two decades and continues to do so. We live in a post-truth culture where truth is subordinated to feelings. Facts and truth don’t matter. Feelings do.
Further, what the Bible says about morality is ignored, and regarded as ludicrous, and something an intelligent person doesn’t believe, much less live by. Especially if it represents morality that conflicts with the morality we want to live out.
So what is this new law all about? To know this, we have to look at history.
When God killed the Canaanites, they were a people that were wicked. They were sexually immoral and they worshiped the god of Molech by sacrificing their babies to it. The god of Molech would be white hot, and they would place their babies in its arms. To drown out the babies screams as they sizzled in Molech’s arms, drums would be played loudly so the parents couldn’t hear their babies cry. The Canaanites were a wicked, wicked people, and so God judged them by killing them. Yes He killed them. It was a judgment. Not murder, and God can do that because He is God, and the author of life. He is a Holy God that hates wickedness.
What’s the difference between the pro-abortion community and the culture of the Canaanites?
Nothing. The Canaanites sacrificed their children to an idol. The pro-abortion community advocates sacrificing babies to an idol as well—the idol of autonomy. The idol is the self—the idol of convenience. On what grounds does a woman have the right to murder her own child? Where does that come from? Where in scripture does it say that’s okay? The truth is that people want to live their own morality, and not God’s morality. That’s what this new law is really all about—autonomy. Apologist Frank Turek contends, “We used to sacrifice ourselves for our children. Now we sacrifice our children for ourselves. We get upset when babies die crossing the border. Why don’t we get upset when babies die crossing our autonomy?” Autonomy is the new idol/religion.
People want to be free from anyrestrictions on their lives. Free to do what they want to do. Morality is subjective, like one’s opinion of their favorite flavor of ice cream, or their favorite sports team. By that I mean, morality is whatever one thinks it is. Morality is not seen as objective anymore. Something objective is something that is true for all people, at all times, in all places, like gravity. You can say you don’t like gravity, but that doesn’t make it non-existent.
This is why we hear people say that “Women should have a choice.” They’re saying that morality is subjective. It’s whatever shethinks it is. They’re saying that she should abide by her subjective preference.
Let’s take this thinking for a ride and follow it to its logical conclusion.
If murder is subjective, then it’s okay to commit murder out of convenience, out of personal preference. Well if that’s okay, then we need to release everyone who is in jail for murder. Why not? It was convenient for them! That was their truth. Their subjective preference.
If murder is subjective, then why should we fight off the terrorists? Why should we waste our time and resources?
Do you see where this logic leads? If murder is legalized based on one’s subjective preference, then the looming question is, who is next? Maybe someone who’s healthcare may be too costly? Maybe senior citizens? Handicapped people? By whose subjective preference is that decision made? This is a very slippery slope.
We don’t really live like this though, do we? We dohave jails for people who commit murder because we know that murder is objectively wrong. It doesn’t matter what one’s opinion or subjective preference is. It’s just wrong and that is self-evident to everyone.
The reality is that if murder becomes subjective, no one is safe. No one.
If murder is subjective, then it will be up to (as we just saw in New York) a handful of people who play God by deciding who should live or die, by theirsubjective preference. That is arrogant and evil.
The question is, for those who made this decision, who applauded this new law and celebrated it by lighting up the Empire State Building in pink, how will things end for them in eternity? It is foolish to live this life as though this life is all there is. There will be divine consequences for those who made this ruling, unless there is repentance. One can say there is no God. But stubbornness doesn’t change truthfulness. In addition, God may judge this country as a result of its wickedness. We certainly would deserve it.
So what does all this mean for us? What do we do about it now?
1. We pray for the hearts of those who put this law into place. Pray that God will reveal truth to them that would cause their hearts to be changed.
2. We pray that God would confuse the plans of the wicked who would actually be performing these abortions—any abortions, and that their plans would go awry.
3. We pray for the mothers of these would-be aborted children. That God would reveal Himself, His promises, and His truths to them so that their minds would be changed, and they would see that a life of autonomy is not God’s way. Pray that they would see that our lives are not our own, that we were bought at a price and our lives are to serve the Lord, and not ourselves.
4. Get out and vote!!! God gave us a voice. Let’s use our voices for good. Lives are dependent on it now. Someday, if all murder is subjective, that life in question may be yours.
Last, if you or someone you know or love has had an abortion, know that there is grace and mercy in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the God of second chances. If you confess your sin to Him, He will forgive. There isforgiveness. If you have done this, then you are forgiven. If you’re still feeling guilty about it, those guilty feelings do not come from our Lord, but the enemy because the Holy Spirit never uses a condemnatory tone. There is grace and mercy in Jesus Christ.
